Lecture 44 - Solution of the Schrodinger Equation for Free Particles & Periodic Boundary Conditions

This lecture we first discusses why waves described by exp(ikx) - and not trigonometric functions like sin(kx) and cos(kx) - are the correct solutions for a free particle. We then discuss how periodic boundary conditions are used to fix the wavevector for these waves and also to normalize the wavefunctions.
