Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
Introduction to Quantum Mechanics. Instructor: Professor Manoj K Harbola, Department of Physics, IIT Kanpur. This is the first course in Quantum Mechanics. The focus of the course is going to be the ideas behind quantum mechanics and its application to simple systems. The course is taught along the lines of development of quantum mechanics so that students get a good feeling about the subject. (from nptel.ac.in)
Lecture 38 - Solution of Schrodinger Equation for a Particle in One and Two Delta Function Potentials |
In this lecture we first discuss symmetry property of the solutions of one-dimensional Schrodinger equation for potentials that are symmetric about the origin, i.e. V(x) = V(-x). Solutions for potentials that are symmetric about some other point, say x=a, can also also satisfy this property because by shifting the origin to x=a, the potentials can be made symmetric about the origin. We then solve for the energy and wavefunction of a particle moving in a delta-function potential and in two delta-function potentials placed symmetrically about the origin. While a single delta function supports one symmetric bound-state, two delta functions support two bound states - one symmetric and the other anti-symmetric about the origin.
