Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
Introduction to Quantum Mechanics. Instructor: Professor Manoj K Harbola, Department of Physics, IIT Kanpur. This is the first course in Quantum Mechanics. The focus of the course is going to be the ideas behind quantum mechanics and its application to simple systems. The course is taught along the lines of development of quantum mechanics so that students get a good feeling about the subject. (from nptel.ac.in)
Lecture 09 - Quantum Hypothesis and Specific Heat of Solids |
We have discussed black body radiation and shown that it can be explained perfectly if oscillators that radiate electromagnetic radiation are considered to be having quantized energies. But is the quantization limited to electromagnetic oscillators? In this lecture we discuss that if mechanical oscillators are also considered to be having quantized energy levels, it explains the vanishing of specific heat of insulators for temperature T=0. This indicates that quantization may be a general rule.
