Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
Introduction to Quantum Mechanics. Instructor: Professor Manoj K Harbola, Department of Physics, IIT Kanpur. This is the first course in Quantum Mechanics. The focus of the course is going to be the ideas behind quantum mechanics and its application to simple systems. The course is taught along the lines of development of quantum mechanics so that students get a good feeling about the subject. (from nptel.ac.in)
Lecture 04 - Black Body Radiation IV - Stefan-Boltzmann Law |
In this lecture it is pointed out that properties of black body radiation depend only on one parameter i.e. the temperature T of the body. Thus the internal energy U=uV (V=volume) and pressure p=u/3 both depend only on T. This is unlike a gas where two parameters (p and V, p and T or V and T) are needed to specify the state of the gas. Using this experimentally established Stefan-Boltzmann law is obtained theoretically by employing the first law of thermodynamics. The lecture ends with statements of Wien's laws for black body radiation.
