5.111 Principles of Chemical Science (Fall 2014, MIT OCW). Instructor: Professor Catherine Drennan. This course provides an introduction to the chemistry of biological, inorganic, and organic molecules. The emphasis is on basic principles of atomic and molecular electronic structure, thermodynamics, acid-base and redox equilibria, chemical kinetics, and catalysis. One year of high school chemistry is the expected background for this freshman-level course.
Lecture 15 - Thermodynamics: Bond and Reaction Enthalpies. Thermodynamics is key to understanding the reactivity of molecules and compounds. In this first of three lectures on thermodynamics, viewers are introduced to ΔH, and asked to consider how much heat it will take to break one type of molecular bond versus another. Viewers are also asked whether a particular chemical reaction will release heat or absorb heat.
