The Silk Road

The Silk Road is a documentary series created through the joint cooperation of China's CCTV and Japan's NHK, exploring China's historical sites, villages, religions and cultures along the ancient trade route. Consisting of twelve episodes, the series takes us on a journey through the Silk Road within China.

Episode 04 - The Dark Castle. The Silk Road crew travel to Khara-khoto, 250 miles from the oasis of Jiu-chang, near the Qilian Mountains in the Gobi Desert. Buried by the Gobi sands, the lost city was unearthed by the Russian explorer Koslov, who took its artworks to the Hermitage. A person of Tangut tribe tells a story about the last king of Khara-khoto - Batir. Khara-khoto was rich and prosperous before its ruins by the the Mongol invasion of the thirteenth century. The episode focuses on why and how the ancient city got ruined.

Eji Nai City, Mongolian as Khar khot and to Chinese as Heishui City, was a Tangut city in the Ejin khoshuu of Alxa League, in western Inner Mongolia, near the former Gashun Lake.
