Great Artists with Tim Marlow

Great Artists with Tim Marlow is an art documentary series presented by Tim Marlow, looking at the lives and works of some of the greatest artists in history. The series aired in 2001 consists of 14 episodes, each of which deals with a different artist and his works. The artists covered by the series include Giotto, Leonardo, Durer, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Bruegel, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, El Greco, Velazquez, Turner, and Van Gogh. Shot in over 50 museums, churches and palaces around the world, this series presents an introduction to the artists and their works.

Episode 01 - Giotto di Bondone
Giotto di Bondone (1266-1337) was an Italian painter and architect from Florence. This episode examines the life and works of Giotto di Bondone, featuring his works such as the frescoes of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and the Church of St Francis in Assisi.

Episode 02 - Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian polymath - painter, sculptor, architect, scientist and engineer. Tim Marlow examines some of Leonardo's works such as the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and The Virgin of the Rocks.

Episode 03 - Albrecht Durer
Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) was a German painter, printmaker, and mathematician from Nuremberg. Tim Marlow examines the life and legacy of Albrecht Durer, exploring Durer's paintings and woodcuts such as Self Portrait Holding a Thistle and Book of The Revelation of St John.

Episode 04 - Michelangelo
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564) was an Italian painter, sculptor, and architect. This episode looks at the life and works of Michelangelo, featuring some of his works such as Bacchus, David, and Pieta.

Episode 05 - Raphael
Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. This episode examines the life and works of the Italian artist Raphael, featuring his paintings such as the Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints, frescoes in Raphael's rooms, and the Portrait of Pope Julius II.

Episode 06 - Titian (Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio)
Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio (1488-1576) was an Italian painter. Titian pioneered the use of oils with a radical approach to light, colour and brush strokes. This episode features some of Titian's works including The Assumption of the Virgin, Bacchus and Ariadne, and Diana and Callisto.

Episode 07 - Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569) was a Flemish Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. This episode features some of Bruegel's works such as The Netherlandish Proverbs, The Triumph of Death, The Hunters in the Snow, and The Peasant Wedding.

Episode 08 - El Greco
El Greco (1541-1614) was a painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. Tim Marlow examines the life and works of El Greco, featuring his works such as The Disrobing of Christ and The Burial of Count Orgaz.

Episode 09 - Peter Paul Rubens
Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a Flemish Baroque painter. This episode looks at the life and works of Peter Paul Rubens, featuring some of his works such as Rubens with Isabella Brant, The Descent from the Cross, and Het Pelsken. Rubens was the most celebrated painter of the early 17th century.

Episode 10 - Diego Velazquez
Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660) was a Spanish painter. He was patronised exclusively by King Philip IV, and his court paintings gave a unique insight into the Spanish monarchy of that period. This episode features some of his works: The Surrender of Breda, Juan De Pareja, and Las Meninas.

Episode 11 - Rembrandt van Rijn
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher. Tim Marlow examines the life and works of the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn, featuring some of Rembrandt's works such as Self-Portrait, The Anatomy Lesson of Doctor Nicolaes Tulp, and The Night Watch.

Episode 12 - Johannes Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Vermeer completed less than 40 works, yet today is considered as great a talent as Rembrandt. His works featured in this episode include View of Delft, The Milkmaid, and Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Episode 13 - J. M. W. Turner
Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) was was a British Romantic landscape painter, water-colorist, and printmaker. Tim Marlow looks at the life and works of William Turner, featuring his works such as 'Fishermen at Sea', 'The Shipwreck', and 'Rain, Steam and Speed - The Great Western Railway'.

Episode 14 - Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter. This episode tells the tortured tale of Van Gogh, featuring some of his works such as The Potato-Eaters, Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, and Wheatfield with Crows.
