An Introduction to Information Theory. Instructor: Prof. Adrish Banerjee, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kanpur. In this course we will explore answers to these two questions. We will study some practical source compression algorithms. We will also study how to compute channel capacity of simple channels. Lecture 05 - Block to Variable Length Coding: Prefix Free Code

In this lecture, we describe the problem of block to variable length coding. We explain what is meant by uniquely decodable codes and present the test for uniquely decodability. We also describe prefix free code and derive the conditions for existence of a prefix free code (Kraft's inequality).
