Polymer Chemistry. Instructor: Prof. Dibakar Dhara, Department of Chemistry, IIT Kharagpur. This course deals with topics in polymer chemistry. The course begins with a thorough introduction about the polymers which includes the classification, nomenclature and perspective of molecular of polymer molecules. Then it discusses various polymerization processes in details: step growth and chain growth polymerization, kinetics of polymerization, copolymerization, ring opening polymerization, and coordination polymers. The course covers the characterization of macromolecules: the thermodynamics of polymer solutions, polymer chain dimensions, and various methods for measuring molecular weight of polymers. Then the course talks about important polymer properties and how the structure of polymer molecules correlates to these properties. It also covers in brief the reaction of polymers which include polymer degradation, stabilization and modifications.
