How Animal Cultures Extend the Scope of Biology

By Andrew Whiten. Research by scientists studying many species has revealed that learning from others ? 'social learning' - can be an important part of their lives and create a variety of traditions that we have come to call 'animal cultures'. In this talk I illustrate how a range of fascinating discoveries in apes, whales, birds and even insects suggest that this 'second inheritance system' is widespread in animals and extends the scope of evolutionary biology in exciting new ways.
